Anadolu University is situated in Eskişehir, a center of education, science and culture. Eskişehir is at the same time a historical town. The city reflects deep traces of civilizations such as the Hittites, Phrygians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljucks and the Ottomans and plays an important role in the Turkish Republic’s modernization efforts. With a known history of 7000 years, it is a cultural mosaic.
Eight percent of its urban population of nearly 600,000 is made up of university students. In other words, Eskişehir is a student city, full of youth. The cafes that are situated on both sides of the river make Eskişehir seem as a resort town.
Transportation
Eskişehir is 5 hours from Istanbul, 3 hours from Ankara, 6 hours from Antalya and Izmir by road. It is at the same time a major hub of the Turkish railway network, and can be reached from any part of the country by train.
Transportation to the campus is easily attained through private or public buses and minibuses throughout the day. On sunny days, however, many students prefer to walk to the center, which takes 20 minutes at the most.
Housing
Although Eskişehir has a big student population, housing does not constitute a problem. Kredi &Yurtlar Institution (State) dormitories alone house a total of 6,500 students. In addition, there are many private dormitories. Students who prefer to rent apartments (furnished or unfurnished) find great support from the residents of Eskişehir. The Counseling Center of Anadolu University helps students overcome housing problems.
Food
Anadolu University has canteens for students in all the faculties and schools. The student cafeteria in the Yunusemre Campus serves nutritious lunches to approximately 7,000 students daily. In addition to this, there are cafeterias at the Bilecik and Bozüyük Vocational Schools and the Civil Aviation School. There are also other restaurants on the campus as well as in the city.
Health
Our students benefit from Anadolu University’s hospital, situated on Yunusemre Campus. Students may receive all types of health services, from eye treatment to psychiatric treatment, from dental treatment to general surgery. Anadolu University’s hospital also provides inpatient care. Students can also have access to Eskişehir’s other hospitals when needed. Anadolu University’s hospital is fully equipped with 4 operating rooms, 4 dental treatment units, ultrasound and X-ray laboratories, clinics and a biochemical laboratory ready to serve students and faculty members.
Counseling
The Counseling Center works to help students adapt to university life and to the environment and assist students in finding solutions to their personal problems. The center assists students with housing, finding part-time jobs and adaptation programs. Students can also benefit from the center by attending personal meetings to solve other personal problems.
Shopping
There are a variety of shops and a market located on Yunusemre Campus for the convenience of Anadolu University students and staff. These shops include bookstores, mail and parcel services, banks, ATMs, hairdressers, and intercity bus ticket services.
Social and Cultural Activities
The undergraduate student body is a highly active one. There are lectures, symposiums, and conferences organized by different academic units as well as concerts, plays and exhibitions on campus. The Anadolu University campus houses exhibition galleries, concert and theatre halls. Many private and public theatre companies perform in these facilities. Each year the Eskişehir Festival is held on the Anadolu University campus. The theatre group “Tiyatro Anadolu” is the Anadolu University staff company staging many classic and modern plays.
There are many student organizations including cultural/performing, service/social, scientific and a variety of media organizations.
Anadolu University Folk Dancing Ensemble is a well-known group which, over the years, has received many awards for successes both nationally and internationally. The student Classical and Folk Music groups enjoy a similar reputation and all three help create an awareness of cultural and artistic values in their fellow students.
Spring Festival
Each year, Anadolu University holds a Spring Festival during which different social and cultural activities are held. The festival is organized by student clubs and it inspires a festive atmosphere in the whole campus community.
Sports
All students can compete and/or participate in different varsity sports. The school of Physical Education and Sports contributes to university teams. The Women’s Table Tennis and Handball teams represent Turkey in many international competitions. Many students also perform in national and international competitions in individual sports.
