Anadolu University is the only university in Turkey, which offers distance education programs, commonly referred to as ‘open education’. Currently, the Faculties of Economics and Business Administration and the Open Education Faculty have more than 1 million students. The number of students who received BA or associate degrees from the distance education programs is nearly 1 million. Anadolu University, with its distance education model, offers educational opportunities to Turkish citizens living not only in Turkey but also in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Western European countries. The University aims to increase the education level of Turkish citizens by meeting the demand for higher education. Anadolu University, with its open education system, offers education opportunities to those who cannot enroll in on-site university programs for different reasons. The Open education faculty offers equal opportunity for education to many, including the handicapped. In the open education system, educational materials comprise a variety of media. Students receive books designed according to self-study principles. Radio and television programs continue to support the textbooks. The television programs are produced at the Radio-Television Production center, which has professional facilities. Students also receive academic support through the Internet and teleconference, which provides students with the experience of using technology in interactive education. The Information Management Program offers its courses on the Internet. This program is the first and only such program in Turkey. The graduates of distance education programs are entitled to the same privileges as those of graduates of residential programs. The Open Education Faculty offers Bachelors degree programs in English Language Teaching and Preschool Teaching and associate degree programs in number of fields. The Faculty provides services to students across Turkey, with offices in every city. The faculty aspires to train future teachers who are equipped with the know-how, technology, and compassion necessary in transferring knowledge from one individual to another. Each student is evaluated individually and judged not only by their abilities and creativity but also by their personality. Each year, out of hundreds of fine young men and women the faculty tries to choose the most talented and promising future artists. Unfortunately, many similarly talented applicants are disappointed not because they are unworthy but because it is simply not possible to squeeze a large number of students into a relatively small freshman class. Each department in the faculty maintains contacts with industry and keeps up-to-date with the needs that arise in the private and public sectors. Therefore, the curriculum is continually revised to enable graduates to adapt to new technologies as quickly as possible. The faculty enjoys modern, well-equipped laboratories as well as extensive personal computer facilities which supplement departmental access to the main university computer. The faculty contains a number of special facilities which meet the demands made by research in nanotechnologies. Much of research in the faculty is financed by grants received from various industries, the State Planning Institute and the Turkish Scientific Research Foundation.
