GENERAL INFORMATION


Cinema and television industries were involved in a rapid change in the beginning of 21st century. Developments in digital technology and other improvements in digital technologies, media, telecommunications and information technologies are leading towards new future, and especially television, besides mass media is influenced by it very much. Department of Cinema and Television has been following all those developments and improvements since its very first day of establishment and aimed to cover all those in its programs; also aimed to prepare its students for that defined future. Besides that solid background on technology, the department is also very much focused on theoretical aspect. It also aims to provide newcomers to the field with fresh and deeply motivated minds. Within those 30 years of education, Cinema and Television, as the oldest department of Faculty of Communication Sciences, has contributed many graduates into fields of cinema, television and advertising, director, producer, cinematographer, script writer, photography artist, administrator and many academicians for both film-television, advertising and academic worlds.

Information about the Department


Producing-directing, script writing and theoretical studies are the essential fields within the Department and in the first two years all students of school of communication sciences take those common courses which are Sociology, Psychology, History of Art, Aesthetics, Introduction to Communication Science, Communication Theories, Scientific Research and Reporting Techniques. They are the core courses which are considered as base and necessary besides those introductory courses of cinema and television which are technical foundations of cinema and television, script writing, foundations of photography and other related theoretical courses.After completing this process, students follow one of those three defined areas in correspondence with academic advisors. While adapting to that state of art technology which is allocated for their use, they are obligated to take advanced level courses such as visual aesthetics, film theories, history of film, film review and analysis, and documentary cinema as part of their theoretical courses. In last two years of studies, they produce and direct four graduation projects as part of their selected areas. Then, they complete their education. The education is consisted of one year English prep and fours years of undergraduate. Faculty members are consisted of 11 full time professors, 3 full time associate professors, 16 full time assistant professors and courses are thought by them besides some other professionals, speicalists and experts providing seminar courses and workshops. Students can benefit from their experience.


Practical courses are made in with fully equipped television studio, 16 professional field cameras, 1 35 mm BL film camera, 2 16 mm BL film cameras, 7 nonlinear editing suites, 1 film editing table, one professional photography studio, 2 black and white and one color photo labratory; at the same time, cinema and television students are the body of regional television station- TVA (Anadolu University's) which they experience the real professional life in it and prepare themselves for the future.

PURPOSE

The purpose of cinema and television department is the educate and prepare individuals for to become producer, director, cinematographer, script writer, specialist in theoretical works for fields of cinema and television.

PROGRAMS OFFERED

B.A. (Bachelor of Art)


Undergraduate students are enrolled through Central Student Selection Exam. The ones pass the exam attend one year of English prep. Ones who do not pass the exam required to study that one year of prep. Each year, 30 students are accepted. It is a 4 year program. 2.0 GPA is a must to graduate. Medium of language is mainly English besides Turkish. In the department, there is also education for master and doctoral students. Those programs are offered in Institute of Social Science in accordance with the department.

M.A (Master of Arts)


Degree of master of arts is made of works of thesis and courses. Students completing 2 semesters, one year, with successful completion, they start working on their theses through aural and written ways. In approximately 2 years time, master of arts is completed.

Ph.D. (Doctorate of Philosophy)


Doctoral degree is made of works of thesis and courses. Students completing 2 semesters, one year, with successful completion, they are taken to a sufficiency exam. The ones passing that exam can start working on their theses through aural and written ways. In approximately 4 years time, doctoral study is completed.

    Faculty members and students of the department often participate in research activities. The academic staff is well-trained in various research methodologies and statistical techniques. Most of these studies are published in international journals, while some are presented in international conferrences. The department as part of Anadolu University, has signed partnership agreements with a number of universities in Europe. Besides institutional collaboration, the faculty members also cooperate with their colleagues in other countries for mutual and individual projects. Faculty members teach and students study in different countries such as The Netherlands, Spain, Estonia, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Italy and France as part of exchange programs. There are also students from those countries studying at the department for at least two semesters.

    There is fully equipped studio allocated to students. Students working in this studio experience issues of lighting, vision mixer's role, and all aspects of television program producing and directing.

    For external shooting and in studio productions, there is a diverse and well variety of equipment for lighting and sound available (800 W. ve 1250 W. lighting sources, microphones, monitor, mixer) and their accessories. At the same time, student are able to use 2 professional and an internationally standardized studio as part of Open Education School and they can also do their internships there.

    Photoraphy Studio


    There are developing and print capabilities for both in black and white and color facilities. There are variety of print possibilities. At the same time, students can use different photo cameras and their equipments.

    VHS-DVD-VCD Archives and Screening Room


    Constantly growing video archives help students to use important selections of film history. Archive is made of 2000 DVD and 2500 VHS format films.
