GENERAL INFORMATION

Pharmacy is an interdisciplinary field of science comprising almost every aspect of drugs and pharmaceutical raw materials. Knowledge on the basic sciences such as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics is necessary not only for the education at the Faculty of Pharmacy but also for the pharmaceutical research which constitutes an integral part of biomedical sciences.
The Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 1968 as a Private School of Pharmacy. In 1971, according to Law No. 1472, the School was made public and in 1979, it became a part of Eskişehir Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences. Finally, in 1982, the School acquired the status of Faculty of Pharmacy in the newly established Anadolu University. The Faculty consists of three departments, namely, Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Technology and Professional Pharmaceutical Sciences . The departments do not independently issue certificates but contribute to the education and training of pharmacy. Graduates may usually work at retail pharmacy shops, hospitals and pharmaceutical industry and/or be apppointed as a research assistant.

PURPOSE

Main purpose of the Faculty of Pharmacy is to provide man power needed by the pharmaceutical sector at graduate and post-graduate levels. For this purpose, students acquire basic and professional knowledge on drug sources (natural, semi-synthetic and synthetic), production of pharmaceutical raw materials, pharmaceutical formulation, therapeutic and toxic effects of drugs during their education periods. As a requirement of fast and continuous developments in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, knowledge given are frequently updated and students learn methods for accessing novel information through computers connected to the internet. Since knowledge is rapidly growing and changing in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, the curriculum development always is an important part for the pharmacy education. As it is known well, drugs are critical to almost all fields of health sciences saving the life of patients as therapeutic tools. On the other hand, the role of a pharmacist seems to be changing due to technological developments in the pharmaceutical industry and a new mission comprising the information of patients is being more important. Therefore, the pharmacy education at Anadolu University has to provide necessary educational tools in order to meet requirements of the information age. The principal education philosophy of the faculty has been to provide a sound professional training which has been consistent with the current scientific and technological state of the art background supported by practice through laboratory applications in pharmaceutical sciences.

PROGRAMS OFFERED

Faculty of Pharmacy provides education for pharmacy students, which is 4 years, ending with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in pharmacy.

B.Sc. students can continue their education in the related fields at the Graduate Institute of Health Sciences for a M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. degree.

The faculty supplies staff, education and laboratory facilities for the M.Sc. and Ph.D.students of the institute.

The faculty consists of the following departments.

    Pharmaceutical Botany

    Pharmacognosy

    Analytical Chemistry

    Pharmaceutical Chemistry

    Pharmaceutical Toxicology

    Pharmaceutical Technology

    Pharmaceutical Microbiology

    Biochemistry

    Pharmacology

    Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

The selection of the students for the faculty of pharmacy is via a centralized countrywide exam being conducted by ÖSYM, Ankara. The avarage number of students are 80 for each year.

The duration of the pharmacy education is 4 years ending with B.Sc. degree. The official language of the education is Turkish.

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The M.Sc. students can continue their education for the M.Sc. degree at the Graduate Institute of Health Sciences of the University. The students are required to take courses and prepare and defend a thesis based on their research. Students require approximately two years to complete the M.Sc. degree.
The faculty of pharmacy supplies members and laboratory facilities for the students graduate instute of health sciences.

Ph.D.

The Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree requires courses and research. The students will conduct original research and prepare a thesis, then make an oral defense of their completed research. Students require about three-four years to complete their Ph.D. programme.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

All the research activities of the Faculty of Pharmacy are conducted by the department mentioned above.
The research areas can be described shortly as follows;
  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry, on synthesis of new drugs,
  • Pharmacognosy (Pharmaceutical Biology) on natural products,
  • Pharmacology, on drug actions, mechanism of actions and screening of chemicals of natural and synthetic origin.
  • Analytical Chemistry on the analysis of drugs and analysis methods of drugs
  • Biochemistry on biochemistry of life.
  • Pharmaceutical Microbiology on microbiological actions of drugs and related chemicals
  • Pharmaceutical Botany on identification and characterization of medicinal and poisonous plants
  • Pharmaceutical Toxicology on the physical, biological properties of poisons, their metabolisms including drugs, industrial and environmental poisons and chemicals
  • Pharmaceutical Technology, on formulation, stability, validation and the all procedures related to their formulation from raw materials and upto their consumption;validation and technology of all related procedures; biological events as a response to the delivery of these materials. Technologies within the scope of this department have an aim of safe and efficacious delivery of pharmaceutical agents which include specification, validation, stability, release of the active agent and biopharmaceutical studies through in vitro and/or in vivo tests.

The resultes of the research activities can be browsed on various databases including Science Citation Index, Chemical Abstracts, pubmed, and other related databases and national and international conference proceedings.
